It’s that time of year

THE Bersih rallies have quickly established themselves as something of a ritual in Malaysia’s political calendar. The script goes something like this: thousands of protesters declare that they are going to march through Kuala Lumpur to demand electoral reform; a twitchy government and protest leaders spend days haggling over a suitable venue; the protest goes ahead in defiance of police demands; violence ensues, hundreds are arrested; government issues some apologies; everyone goes home. The only significant variant is the political impact. Last year it was huge—this year it will probably be very little.

The Bersih 3.0 rally on April 28th certainly attracted more people than last year’s version, perhaps as many as 80,000 (although the police put the figure at about half of that). As there will almost certainly be a general election in the coming months, perhaps the high level of interest wasn’t that surprising. But by comparison last year’s rally, despite a relatively smaller number of protesters, achieved a terrific political impact.

Stung by widespread criticism in the international press, Mr Najib’s government was forced to apologise for much of its behaviour. Subsequently it repealed a slew of outdated and repressive laws to win back its reforming credentials. A parliamentary committee was also set up to look into proposals for electoral reform. In all, a clear victory to Bersih.

However, this year there were problems on the Bersih side too. Some protesters attacked and overturned a police car and it seems that about 20 police officers were wounded. This, of course, played into the government’s hands, allowing Mr Najib to claim that “The police were victims. They became targets and were beaten.” The leader of Bersih, Ambiga Sreenevasan, conceded that some people will think that “the rally had gone wrong” because of the unruly behaviour of a few protesters. The violence may even tarnish the broader movement for democratic reform, a bit. And Mr Anwar had some explaining of his own to do. He was caught on video near one of the police barricades talking to one of his colleagues; critics allege that he was inciting supporters to push aside the barriers. Mr Anwar himself says this is nonsense.

Either way, it is clear that Bersih won’t be able to dominate the moral high ground—at least not on the score of one weekend’s theatrics—as they did last year. The campaign for electoral reform goes on, but Mr Najib emerges from this year’s fracas with his reformist credentials essentially intact, not much worse for the wear.

Jarumemas:  The  Malays proverb says, "Beraja di mata bersultan di hati" is what the Bersih 3.0 is trying to be. I am sure the majority  will make sure that Bersih 3.0 fail in their demands.

Nine journalists and photographers were named in the statement as having been attacked or arrested by police.

Jarumemas: Hmmm....did all of you provoke the police to attack and ill-treat the journalists and photographers?

Anwar says BN acting like Hitler, Stalin

PETALING JAYA, April 30 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today accused the Barisan Nasional (BN) government of emulating the likes of World War II dictators Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin for blaming the chaos at Saturday’s Bersih rally on the “innocent masses who are now deemed criminals.”

The opposition leader referred to statements by BN leaders and coverage by media linked to the ruling coalition, specifically pointing to yesterday’s New Sunday Times’ front-page headline “A day of shame”

“We shall not be intimidated by continuous lies spawned by the state and Umno-controlled media. This is the classic response of authoritarian regimes. Innocent masses, victims of oppression, now deemed as criminals.

Jarumemas: Well, Anwar say as you like. You and your party always make damages in the country. e know that you will never stop doing these so as if your party won in the elections. You will make more damages to the nation...by selling Malaysia to foreign nations because you never had enough. You will destroy the Malays, you will destroy Islam, you will destroy the economy and many more.

DBKL locks down Dataran for 48 hours

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will enforce a 48 hour lock down on Dataran Merdeka from 6am tomorrow morning.

In a statement late this evening, Kuala Lumpur mayor Ahmad Fuad Ismail said restriction will be enforced based on Local Government (Dataran Merdeka) (Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur) By-Laws 1992 and Section 65 of the Local Government Act 1976.

Ahmad Fuad (right) said the restriction will be lifted at 6am on Sunday morning. The short one-paragraph statement was issued late this evening. This comes just 24 hours after a meeting between Ahmad Fuad and Bersih 2.0's steering committee broke down .

Yesterday, Ahmad Fuad had urged Bersih to move its Bersih 3.0 rally  away from Dataran Merdeka, citing security concerns and public order. However, Bersih is adamant on holding the rally at Dataran Merdeka because it was too late to change venues as many of its supporters may not receive the instruction in time.
Bersih co-chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan said that there will be a bigger problem for the authorities if the group had to turn away people from Dataran Merdeka and re-direct them to Stadium Merdeka, which is about a kilometre away.

When informed about the matter, the student groups that are currently occupying Dataran Merdeka said they will not budge unless threatened.

Another group, Occupy Dataran, which has joined the student's sit-in - now in its 13th day - said they will convene a meeting a midnight before deciding on their next move.

Jarumemas: This is because Ambiga (negeri folks said 'begar' which means a real stuborn person) still insisted Bersih 3 to be held in Dataran Merdeka. The KL folks will have to stay away from KL. I thought of going to a book fair in PWTC but have to postpone because the road around KL will be very badly jammed due to the closure.

Pemantau antarabangsa kutuk pelaksanaan sistem pilihan raya Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR 26 April: Pemerhati Misi Antarabangsa Pencarian Fakta Tentang Pilihan Raya (IFFMEM) mengutuk sistem pilihan raya di Malaysia kerana memberi masa berkempen terlalu singkat.

IFFMEM turut disertai Senator Pakistan, Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo; Dekan Kolej Undang-undang, Universiti Timur Filipina, Amando Valdez;  dan Penyelaras Projek Serantau Yayasan Kebebasan Friedrich Naumann – FNF, Juliane Schmucker.
