MACC suggests integrity be part of school subjects

THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has suggested that the Education Ministry include a module on integrity and corruption prevention in three subjects at the primary and secondary school levels beginning next year. MACC deputy chief commissioner (Prevention), Datuk Sutinah Sutan said the three subjects were Religious Education, Civic Education and Moral Education, and that the proposal had been submitted to the ministry in June. She said the MACC had in fact, discussed the proposal with the ministry's Curriculum Division. "We have also discussed with the Teachers Education Institute, the proposed establishment of a corruption prevention secretariat at each teacher training centre to educate the trainee teachers on such values as honesty, trustworthiness, sincerity and integrity which are elements to be included in the school module." Sutinah said this at a press conference after opening a conference on corruption prevention attended by school principals, school heads and the chairmen of parent-teacher associations in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, here, today. She said with such a module, the role of schools in moulding students to become excellent human capital would also be more effective. She added that the emphasis on integrity from the school level could help prevent individuals from involving in corrupt practices when they enter working life. — Bernama Jarumemas: Missed my school days very much...
