GEORGE TOWN: As part of a move to counter the Opposition's smear campaign, the state government has embarked on its own drive to clear the air by the end of the week.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said 150,000 pamphlets outlining the "truth" behind issues such as the Bayan Mutiara land issue and others would be distributed to Penangites in batches by the end of the week.
"My friends in Pakatan Rakyat and others outside the party are worried that my safety will be compromised if people believe these 'lies' being spread by Umno. Several police reports have been lodged but harm could still occur," he said.
Lim said the issues brought up by the Opposition were sensitive as it involved religion and race. One example Lim said, was the claim that he had sold off a piece of land meant for a mosque in Bayan Mutiara and another that he was against Bahasa Malaysia as a national language.
"I have explained these issues countless times but my comments were never carried by certain newspapers. These are serious issues … I can't take this lightly because they incriminate me," he said.
The four-page pamphlet printed in Bahasa Malaysia highlights eight "untruths" including the sale of the Bayan Mutiara land, Lim's non-requirement of Indian voters and Malay community houses demolished by the state government.
Lim said it would be translated into English and other languages later.
